Lake Conroe is one of the Lone Star state’s best-kept secrets. The beautiful lake just north of Houston makes for a marvelous weekend getaway, day trip, or longer getaway. There are homes, condos, cabins, cottages, and beach houses around the lake that are more affordable than rentals on the Gulf coast. These wonderful vacation rentals are available at Lake Conroe right on the water and can accommodate your family or group of friends, no matter the size of your party.

If you’re looking for fun on the water near Houston, your first inkling might be to head southeast to the beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. While that is always a terrific idea, it’s not the only outlet for water activities in the region. You can also head 40 miles north of Houston to Lake Conroe for an ideal mix of exploration and peacefulness. The 21,000-acre lake on the west fork of the San Jacinto River is about 21 miles long, offers 157 miles of shoreline, and is widely considered a top spot for fishing, boating, jet-skiing, stand-up paddleboarding, and soaking up that big ol’ Texas sun.

The man-made lake was conceived and created in the early 1970s as an alternative water supply for the city of Houston. (The city owns two-thirds of the lake. The San Jacinto River Authority owns the other one-third.) The lake runs through a wooded area called East Texas Piney Woods, with 5,000 acres located in the Sam Houston National Forest.

What Is Margaritaville Lake Resort Like?

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention one of Lake Conroe’s biggest attractions, the Jimmy Buffett-inspired Margaritaville Lake Resort. The resort has golf and trendy restaurants. The resort is great for entertainment purposes but is typically overpriced and crowded for most of the year.
