Sure, you can chill at the beach, but there’s got to be more to do than that, right? Correct. In fact, there’s quite a bit to do. Called the “Fishing Capital of Texas,” Port Aransas offers all kinds of ways to reel ‘em in. You fish the bays and channels, cast a line from a public pier, or drop a line in the surf. There are lots of fishing tournaments throughout the summer – there’s usually something for anglers every weekend.

Port Aransas has six sites on the Great Texas Birding Trail, and Mustang Island is a prime spot for birdwatching. There are five nature preserves in the region with hiking, biking and wildlife viewing areas. You can comb the beach for seashells, learn about sea turtles and marine birds at the Amos Rehabilitation Keep, or go on a dolphin-watching cruise.

In the water, you can surf, boogie board, sail and jet-ski. Or you can kayak or go stand-up paddle boarding. Out of the water, there’s parasailing, kiteboarding, windsurfing, a day at the spa, or shopping. Play a round of golf at Palmilla Beach Club. There are several boutiques, galleries and shops with fantastic local fashion and home décor. The Port Aransas Museum has tours of the Chapel of the Dunes, the oldest consecrated church on the island.

Beaches at Port Aransas

With 18 miles of public beach, there’s room to stretch out. The beaches are drivable outside of the bollards, but you need a parking permit to take a vehicle onto the beach. Bollards are poles that separate the driving lane from the rec area. They are found between the south jetty and Mile Marker 19. The speed limit on the beach is 15 mph, and parking permits are around $12. Driving in the dunes is prohibited.

There are a few local beaches worth a closer look:

  • Mustang Island: Enjoy 18 miles of beautiful, undisturbed Texas coastline. Mustang Island State Park offers a five-mile stretch of beach along the coast of Mustang Island.
  • I.B. Magee Beach & Horace Caldwell Pier: Located just on the other side of the rolling sand dunes that stretch along the small town of Port A. Located down from the jetty is the 1,200-foot Horace Caldwell Pier. You can walk out over the Gulf of Mexico and fish.
  • San Jose Island: St. Jo’s is uninhabited and undisturbed, with miles of quiet open beach to explore, only a short boat ride away.
  • Padre Island National Seashore: This national park is a nature enthusiast’s dream. Visitors of the 70-mile-long Padre Island National Seashore can experience the coastline in its most natural state.

At the beach, it’s important to know the rules. No glass bottles or containers are permitted. On-leash pets are allowed. Small fires are OK on the beach, if they are no larger than 3 feet wide by 3 feet deep, and 3 feet high.
