Getting to Know Surfside Beach
Surfside Beach – also known as just Surfside – is located on the southwestern tip of Follet’s Island near the city of Freeport. It is bordered on the southwest by Freeport Harbor, and on the southeast by the Gulf of Mexico. The village of Quintana is across from the harbor. The Intercoastal Waterway forms the northwest boundary in some areas and runs through the northwest part of the city. Bluewater Highway runs the length of Surfside Beach and continues northeast on Follet’s Island for 13 miles, all the way to San Luis Pass and the bridge to Galveston Island. Texas State Highway 332 originates in Surfside Beach and heads to the northwest, past Freeport for 12 miles to Lake Jackson.
The Surfside beach community has a population of slightly less than 500 people, and there are about 900 housing units in the region. It’s known as the “Cradle of Texas Liberty” because the Treaty of Velasco, which ended hostilities between Mexico and Texas, was signed at Fort Velasco, which was located near the community’s present-day city hall.
Surfside is one of the cleanest beaches in Texas. It’s a popular spot for families because of the variety of water-related activities and the fun coastal eateries in the area. Compared to Galveston, Surfside is a much quieter community. It’s also a little more low-key than nearby Crystal Beach. You can get from Surfside Beach to Galveston via the ferry, but there can be a lengthy wait (it’s a busy line). There’s easy parking at Surfside Beach, and you can fish right on the beach.
